Dear friends and family, Jan/Feb 2022 We are confident that our Lord will not only perform His good work in you all and us personally, but also

as it pertains to His church! This year has certainly gotten off to a great start for us at the Hualapai Baptist Church. In recent days, COVID restrictions have been lifted and we are back to “code green!” The human loss and toll on everyone has been enormous. We remain grateful to God Who sustains and strengthens us through every challenge.

As a result of lifted restrictions, HBC’s jail and juvenile home ministries have resumed. Brother Raynard has met with the male inmates on a few occasions already, while Sherry and Laurie have been in to see the ladies once so far. During that visit last week, only one young lady came out to hear the Bible study Laurie had prepared. However, that inmate did accept Christ as her Saviour! The ladies are looking forward to their next visit tomorrow night. Brother Scott will have his second service at the juvenile home tomorrow, too!

Sherry is just about to finish up a second round of “Women of the Word” studies. She along with four other women meet on Monday nights to learn how to effectively study the Bible. This marks the second time Sherry has gone through this particular study. All the ladies that have participated gain valuable tools and skills to help them rightly divide the Word of God.

Steve and Brother Melvin have been asked to minister during several funerals the last couple months. Steve has preached two services sharing the gospel each time. Melvin has been asked to preach two different services also presenting the gospel while encouraging the family members. It has been rewarding to see God open up doors for Brother Melvin who has been serving as a deacon for a number of years now. He has also taken on the teaching responsibilities of the teen Sunday school class since we were able to resume Sunday school last year.

One of the advisory board members of the Independent Baptist Indian Mission, Evangelist Glen Jaspers, was with us for a full day of services on January 30. Brother Jaspers and his wife, Mary, have been dear friends for many years. We were encouraged and strengthened by their ministry among us. They have been wintering here in Arizona the last couple years increasing their involvement among our IBIMI missionaries. We are blessed to have them regularly available to assist in the various ministries around the state.

Another highlight was the opportunity to assist the West Branch of the Bill Rice Ranch. Last year we helped hang much of the drywall for the new Rasmussen Crossing. In February we returned to finish the taping and mudding. The building is well on the way to receiving the permits needed for summer camp.

We have seen a return to our pre-COVID numbers the last couple weeks. The larger crowds (around 70) have lifted our spirits! The singing is more robust, and the testimonies have been an encouragement to everyone. Over the last three Sunday mornings, we have seen three significant decisions: February 13 a young lady accepted Christ, February 20 a young mother gained assurance of salvation, and just yesterday a young man accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour!

Other good news, we resumed our monthly Super Sunday Schedule. During the entire COVID outbreak I think we had only had two Super Sundays, while the one scheduled for January did have to be canceled due to another spike in cases resulting in a code red-the most severe. By February we had dropped to code green- completely open-Praise the LORD! Again, the spirits were high as we met for an early 8:00 AM service, shared breakfast at 9:00, met for Sunday school at 10:00 followed by the worship service at 11:00.

Thank you to those who have contributed to our vehicle fund. So far $13,022.25 has come in for this need. We hope to raise $40,000 in order to purchase a small RV and towable vehicle to facilitate a furlough this fall. Dear Friends in Christ
Are you enjoying your winter season?  Here in our area, we have had a cold (-1 yesterday when we got up but warmed up to 4 this morning!) and a dry winter.   We are so thankful for how abundantly God has provided the firewood that we use to heat our home!  

Job 38:22-“Hast thou entered into the treasures of the snow?…”

 At 7,000 ft above sea level, we are in a high mt. desert- and summer monsoons (rainy season from mid-July to mid-Sept.) and winter snow is how we replenish our water supply. Every few years, we get a winter with heavy snowfall and we are ready for it.  The past few summers and winters have been really dry.  This past week, we got a few inches of snow but otherwise, it has been dry. The winter weather does affect our ministry.  Because of the cold and possible snowy roads in the high country, few meetings are scheduled until the weather warms up.  However, our ministry hasn’t stopped, but rather has concentrated on more one-to-one serving.  

Both of us have been able to help neighbors that have needed rides to medical appointments. This gives us good opportunities to talk to them privately about the Lord.  They have professed to know Christ as Saviour, but need encouragement to trust God through these physical struggles.

We have also had several phone sessions with Christians that are facing difficulties and crisis in their lives and we have been able to pray with them and give them Scripture to help and encourage them.  Pray with us that our counsel will not be human wisdom but rather God’s guidance. 

We are also using this slower period for preparation time.  The Northern Arizona School of the Bible is to begin the spring semester on March 7.  Sam will be teaching Basic Bible Doctrines II and New Testament Survey II.  They will also be providing a class on Bible Study Methods.  Pray with us for the students that attend; that these classes will be a real help in their daily walk.

We are still waiting to hear that the Dine Bible School is going to begin again.  Pray with us for the Lord’s leading and wisdom for the pastor to know when to start again.  We know some of the students are eager to get back into class again.

Please continue to pray with us as plans are even now in progress for the Easter teleconference with the Navajo Bible Conference.

Plans are being made for this summer’s work on the radio station project in Thorne Bay, Alaska.  We are still praying for electric to be brought to the property, as this lack will restrict the time for broadcasting.  We also need to pray for the Lord’s leading as to the right man to move to the area and maintain the radio programming.

February 2022 Prayer Letter
Dear Family and Friends,
The past few months have been busy but blessed! We thank you all for your continued prayers for us!     In the month of November, we have seen 1 young man answer the call to preach and we were able to have 4 visitors at New Haven Baptist Church! We were also able to begin Bible studies with 2 young men and an adult lady.          At the end of the month, we had a Thanksgiving Meal to help us to get to know each other as a church and to encourage those without family nearby.     In the month of December, we hosted/attended a week long Native Revival. Pastor Saunders from Mt. Powell Baptist Church preached and his church family brought special music for 2 days of revival at New Haven Baptist Church. We were able to have a meal after each service, and a Quechan lady was kind enough to make Native Tacos and Stew!     We then attended a 3 day revival at my father in law’s church (Cocopah Bethel Baptist Church) where we had special music from other churches, 3 Native preachers, and food. Everyone had a great time!           We had a special group come down from Lodi, CA (Big Valley Bible Baptist Church )  that brought special gift boxes for the Christmas party scheduled for the end of December. They were gauged towards boys and girls of each age range. We are so thankful for their willingness to come down! Not only did they bring the boxes, they also assisted in passing out Tracts, helping to clean the church, and providing nursery toys! We were blessed that week!    On Sunday, December 19th, we had our New Haven Christmas party and all of the children were able to get a box! On December the 22nd, we had our Cocopah Christmas party and were able to give out the rest of the Christmas boxes.     In January, we had a high attendance of 28! Then towards the middle of the month, we had a few in our church contract Covid. We sanitized, cleaned, and kept the church doors open for services for the ones who did not have Covid. Towards the end of January, I contracted Covid and my wife had a stomach bug.     Thankfully, Bro. Ronnie Henderson and his wife were able to fill in the pulpit for me and Pastor Tom McConkey of Liberty Baptist Church in Yuma, AZ filled in for me on a Thursday night when I was down. Praise the Lord it only lasted a few days with no lasting complications!     Some are asking how we are ministering to New Haven and Cocopah Bethel Baptist Church. Our current schedule is on Sundays we do Sunday School & Sunday Morning Service from 10 a.m. to noon at New Haven Baptist Church in Winterhaven, CA.     Then at 5 p.m., we help pick up a van route for the Cocopah church. Then at 6 p.m. we assist Bro. and Mrs. Veldhuis in any way possible during the Evening Service.On Wednesdays, we help pick up a van route and lead the Cocopah Teen Class. On Thursdays, we have our 6:30 p.m. Mid-week Service.     Please pray for us and our church as we move forward. Thank you!

Grammar Oct/Nov 2022

Once again, this year, we won’t be sending out a separate letter for the month of November s we won’t be home but spending some time with our family for Thanksgiving (and of course, some deer hunting with the kids and grandkids!)  We would appreciate your prayers as we travel.  This  year, we will not be flying but driving.

Janet’s leg is improving and the Dr. and physical therapist don’t see any need for more visits unless things change.  They do predict it will take some time for the muscles to re-learn their purpose and things become “normal” once again.  We felt that by driving and pulling a cargo trailer that has been outfitted with bed and eating area, Janet won’t have as many steps to climb and hopefully give time for continued progress.

It has been a year of challenge with the 3 major wild fires, flashflood warnings and Janet’s injury, but God has been good to us, providing protection and all our needs and more.  We can only thank Him.  What a great God we have!!

While away, we hope to visit with some of the volunteer workers from the past couple of summers at the Radio Station project in Thorne Bay. AK.  Some of the things we had hoped to accomplish had to be postponed until next year.  In particular, we could not put siding on the building because it was just not available.  Cedar is considered the best for the climate in the area and there was none to be found.  We do have someone trying to locate and cut the lumber so it can be put on next summer. However flooring and electrical wiring were put in, so the time was not wasted.  How thankful we are for workers that know how to do these various tasks.

Please continue to pray with us for:

1- the needed cedar siding .(Hopefully it will be cut and ready by next summer and at a reasonable cost.)

2-the electric will be brought to the property and the generator will no longer be needed

3-direction for the man that God would have live there and maintain the broadcasting

4-people will hear the gospel message and accept Christ as Saviour and grow spiritually.

5-we have been able to stay out of debt.  (funds are needed to continue to meet future costs of building and for the missionary who will keep the station going.)

Northern Arizona School of the Bible only has 2 more classes (after tonight) to finish the fall semester.  What a joy to be able to serve the Lord in this ministry.

Dear Family and Friends:
As we begin another year, perhaps you have thought of goals or directions for your life. If you were to have a theme for this year, a good theme would be, “Walking with God.” Or to put it another way perhaps, “Taking another step with God.” No matter where you are in your walk with God, may this year find you taking that next step (or steps) with God. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27.

For some time, we have desired to grow as a church in prayer. At our Wednesday night services, during our prayer time, there seemed to be a hesitation to pray together. Then in the last two or three months, there has been an openness as burdens were shared and each person prayed. The first Wednesday night everyone prayed, Paul gave a short devotional thought on the idea of praying together (using examples from the early church and Scriptural commands). Not knowing how they would respond, Paul took some requests and opened the time for prayer. We were thrilled as each person there that night prayed for and with one another. Although we still need to grow in prayer, we are encouraged to see steps of growth.

In previous letters we asked you to pray for Bob. He faithfully comes to the services and is showing a desire to grow in his walk with God. His wife died about a year ago due to drug overdose and then the grandmother used the tribe to remove the children from the home. Bob is working through the Tribal Court requirements and hopes his children will be back soon. Until then, the Tribal Court requires him to take a parenting class, so Paul is using some preaching videos on parenting. Last week when the video ended, Bob could hardly speak as he was confronted with convicting truth. Please pray the truths he hears will help him to be the father he should be and help him to have a home where God is glorified.

This Sunday, Paul is beginning a series on addictions for the adult Sunday School class. Our hearts are burdened as we see so many live in defeat to the consuming control of addictions. Please pray as we discover the life- changing truth of God’s Word. Specifically, please pray for Simon, Carol, Ida, and Cyrus. Also please pray for Paul as he prepares and teaches.

Please pray for Tommy and Shannon our next-door neighbors. Shannon came to a recent ladies Bible study and really responded to the truths. She has a salvation testimony and a good foundation in the Bible. Last Saturday, Shannon came over and Naomi began a Bible Study using The Encounter which looks at three people in the Bible who met Jesus. Paul is hoping for opportunities with Tommy but has been hindered through scheduling.

For the last few months, we have been joined by Mike and Sue Smith. For several years, Pastor Smith has pastored a small work nearby, but due to various changes out of their control, they felt the need to close their doors– at least temporarily. The Smiths have faithfully served the Lord for many years and have seen God bless their ministry in wonderful ways. The Smiths and their people are joining Living Waters Baptist Church and have already been a great help through preaching, music, and counseling.

You may remember us mentioning the need to replace our modular building. This is where we have children’s classes, ladies Bible studies, and fellowship meals. The current building is a modular and was built in the 1950’s. In recent years, its age has begun to show. Through the sacrifice of God’s people, we are beginning the process of replacing the building. Please pray as we work through many permits, testing, inspections, planning, scheduling, and so much more.

Dear Family and Friends In Christ,
Belated best wishes and prayers for a healthy and rewarding 2022 accompany our genuine

gratitude for the numerous persons and ways our Lord strengthened and provided for bus, building, and property repairs in time for our December 8-10 Native Revival and the ensuing Christmas ministries.

Unseasonably warm weather delayed fruit picking until after our revival, but the unforgettable three days’ fellowship, testimonies, preaching, and godly music set a perfect trajectory for the remainder of December’s compressed opportune labors.

Only the combined prayers, in person help, and perfect gifts from too many of you to name could’ve gotten hundreds of fruit bags and a clear Gospel invitation to almost each of our three reservations’ homes in time for our Christmas service!

Donations of every sort throughout the year were the heart of dozens of age and gender-specific gifts- used in turn to invite individuals of any age to trust and receive God’s unspeakable gift of eternal life in the Lord Jesus Christ as the full payment for their sin (II Cor, 5:21, 9:15)

Several teens from the normally closed traditional Brown, Day, and Garcia families heard the gospel again, though none made professions of faith. PRAY for true conversions of those asking questions about the Gospel as well as for the spiritual needs of the many nominal believers through weekly services, Bible clubs, and our revival with Pastor Joe Doyel of Emmanuel Rescue Mission, Los Angeles, CA, February 6th-9th.

HUGE THANKS to the many who helped revive our 1982 20 passenger bus for daily pickups and to Treasure Valley Baptist Church of Meridian, Idaho for vastly improving our pickups for meetings like this through their donation of a beautiful 66 passenger bus. The chance to replace our other “bondo bus” with this larger cruiser made weeks of sanding and painting it to Arizona requirements more than worthwhile!

P.T.L. for renewing my C.D.L. through strict annual neurological and cardiovascular tests and for healing Dawn sufficiently from Covid-aggravated bronchitis to carry on all her 15-passenger van pick-ups and ladies and children’s ministries!

We have scarcely scratched the surface of describing the unending needs and means of reaching Native Americans with the Gospel and so thank you for trusting us with the unmentioned challenges and faithfully furthering every labor through prayer.

Less than 2 weeks ago, we returned from travels to spend Thanksgiving with our family.  It was a good trip.  Not counting potholes, the roads were clear and the weather dry.  4 times we had traffic slow and even stop because of accidents ahead.  Once we drove past an accident that occurred only moments before that had severe injuries,  It was a reminder to us of God’s protection and keeping us from being involved in any of them.  We did have a flat tire-but again, we saw God protecting us and providing in various ways.  Being just after Thanksgiving we were able to get all new tires at a good price; saving us a few hundred $’s.  (He even protected our home while we were away and we are thankful for neighbors that watched for us and brought in our mail.) 

Thank you for praying for Janet’s knee.  Recovery is slow, but steady and we are thankful that no surgery seems to be required.

While in NC, we were able to meet with some of our volunteer crews on the Alaskan Radio Project and make plans for this coming summer’s work.   Please continue to pray for us for:

1-electric to be brought to the property so generator power will no longer be necessary and broadcast hours won’t be restricted.

2-The right missionary to man the station and the financial support he will need.

3-Supplies and costs of supplies needed to complete the building.  (This past summer, we were unable to obtain the needed cedar siding.  This is now being cut and hopefully ready for us when our work teams are there.)

Janet presently  has 3 piano students and 2 of them are being trained as church pianists.  The 3rdis a Mormon girl that she is hoping to witness to.  She would appreciate your prayers as she teaches each one.

Sam is presently taping a teaching of the book of Titus.  Pray that these recordings will be helpful to future students.

Due to the increase of postage costs, we aren’t sending many Christmas cards this year.  We hope you are rejoicing with us that our Creator loved us so much that He took on Human form and came as a baby, knowing that He would have to die a painful death so that we can spend eternity with Him. The best Christmas gift of all time!!!

Dear Friends in Christ

In the fall of 1972, we packed up our 3 girls (later God gave us 2 more daughters and a son) and left Maryland, where we were on staff at a Christian camp.  We had a tent for a home on the road and were headed for Arizona to minister to the American Indian tribes.  This is our 50th year of ministering here in the southwest and God has faithfully met all our needs-and more!
Our aim was to train the Believers in the different tribes to reach and minister to their own people.
1-They lived there and knew the people personally.  Also, they weren’t strangers to the people in their own community.  They are also able to live on the Reservation among them, as they are tribal members by birth.
2-Many of them knew their tribal languages.  Our public education system has made English known to most but the elderly still have a primary language of their people.  (There is also a push among the younger generations to learn their native language and not lose their tribal identity.)
3-They know the traditions and culture of their people.  They would recognize whether a practice is merely an acceptable habit or if there is religious significance connected to it.
Learning about God’s Word has made some aware of their need for salvation and over the years, we have had opportunities to lead some to Christ personally.   However, much of our ministry has been in local churches and among Christians.
This past month, a Navajo lady shared with us how the death of a cousin allowed her father to lead his sister (mother of the deceased) to Christ.  We asked her father’s name, wondering if we knew him.  We didn’t know him, but she then shared how her father was led to Christ by another Believer.  This Believer was one of our Bible School students from years past and is now pastoring on the Reservation.  What a blessing to see God is working still in lives and that He has seen fit to let us be a part of this work.
Please continue to pray with us as plans are even now in progress for the Easter teleconference with the Navajo Bible Conference.
Also pray with us for the upcoming classes of the Northern Arizona School of the Bible that are scheduled to begin in March. 
 Many of the Navajo churches are slow to reopen after this pandemic and we are hoping they will soon be able to once again begin the Dine Bible Institute on the Navajo Reservation.  We have heard from some of the former students that are eager to be back in class.  Pray with us for wisdom for the pastors to open the churches back up.
Pray:  We have already been in contact with men that want to help again next summer in the construction of the radio station project in Thorne Bay,  Alaska.   We need to schedule their time in AK as they need to put in for vacation time at their jobs.  
 There is still no electric to the property and a diesel powered generator will cost around $6,000. Pray that electric will become available.  It will eliminate this expense and will also allow us to broadcast through the night
as there is presently a restriction to running generators during the evening hrs to reduce the noise created by generators.

Ministry News:

Hualapai Baptist Church is missions minded!

While HBC remains a mission work, it is no less missions minded. We currently support 17 missionaries world-wide. One of the ministries we support is the West Branch of the Bill Rice Ranch just down the road in Williams, AZ. Our men have helped with various projects at West Branch over

the years including a drywall project in November.

We continue to encourage our men to take on leadership roles at church. All of our Sunday school classes are currently taught by couples, including our beginner’s class. Our current deacon is also beginning to preach occasionally. The men often fill in for Steve when he has to be out of town. God continues to encourage us through the ministry to which He has called us.

Our home school co-op had opportunities to sing in church and at the elderly center. Both the ladies and mens groups enjoyed their Christmas parties. And the Sunday school classes presented a meaningful Christmas program.

The Independent Baptist Indian Mission is dedicated to reaching lost Native Americans with the gospel, and establishing strong Baptist Churches throughout North America. Thank you for your continued support of this ministry through your prayers and financial gifts.

Full house in December!

We were unusually blessed during the month of December to host two HBC missionaries in our home. Housing 18 people in our house at one time was a wonderful challenge with great fellowship.

Then Jon and Jackie were in from NC and Josh was home from TX. We had a great visit and are very thankful for the many Christmas gifts we received from you!

Dear Family and Friends,

     My family and I hope you all had a great Christmas! God has been faithful towards my family and I (Jacob). This year was exciting! God provided $35,000 for us to purchase our land and property, New Haven Baptist Church got started, we experienced our first VBS on the Quechan Reservation, began Bible studies with the Teen boys and men, and have seen God work in great ways! We have seen several Natives come to Christ, a teenage boy was saved and called to preach, we have had the opportunity to baptize 2 teenagers, and we have had up to 30 people in attendance. To God be the glory! On the Cocopah Reservation, my family and I are continuing assisting the church with Sunday nights and Wednesday night services. On Wednesdays, my wife and I have the opportunity to run the Cocopah Teens for Christ Class. A lot of the teens have been so neglected by family that a lot of times they wonder if God even  exists. We are going through a series called “Be All You Can Be” (Luke 9:23). I go through Bible characters who were used by God and teach them what each characters had to do in order to be used by God. We had several come to Christ this year! Please keep these teens in your prayers! They have no one to care for them.

This year has been exciting and with all the things God is doing, we know Satan is working. Continue to pray for us as we minister to the reservations and nearby areas! 
As many of you know, my wife contracted Covid-19 in the middle of October. Although she still struggles with her lungs due to “post Covid syndrome,” God has been good and spared and preserved all 3 of us! We thank you for the prayers from many of you on our behalf!

God has been so good to us! We need to show our thankfulness by serving Him through our local church.

Here are a few goals we have for 2022

* We keep pressing forward in getting the gospel to the Cocopah and Quechan reservations.

* Try to get into the Quechan school.

Grammer November & December 2021

Dear Friends in Christ,
Each year, we try to visit our children, grandchildren and now great grandchildren that live along the east coast for Thanksgiving.  Therefore , we seldom send out a letter during the month of November but combine it with our December letter.  You haven’t been forgotten!
Recently we both lost a family member in death.  Sam’s oldest sister, Beverly, died from COVID complications at the age of 83 back in PA.   Though many of our family (Children, siblings & grand children) have had COVID, this is the first time that we lost one to the virus.    Janet also lost an uncle, Cloyse Drake, as a result of cancer.  Again, he was older, retired as a missionary & pastor in Oregon.   Death of loved ones and friends, reminds us that we will all face death one day and need to be ready to stand before God.  Have you accepted the gift of God? – salvation because of Christ’s death on our behalf.  So many today try to be good enough for Heaven, which is impossible.  Heaven is a place of perfection and none of us can meet that requirement.  That’s why God came as a man to pay sin’s penalty for us that we cannot pay.  That is why we are celebrating Christmas.  We hope you are celebrating with us and rejoicing in our Lord and Saviour.
In November, Sam was able to take part in another teleconference for Thanksgiving; reminding of all we have to be thankful for in Christ.  All went well with the connections and we are now planning for another teleconference for Christmas in the next couple of weeks on the question of just why Jesus came to earth as a man.  This is done by the Western Navajo Bible Conference and each time, they have an English speaker (Sam) and a Navajo pastor speaking in Navajo the following day.  Please pray as they prepare the messages and that God will also prepare the hearts of those who call in that Christians will be encouraged and that unbelievers will be saved and God glorified.
The final class for this semester of the Northern Arizona School of the Bible was held the last Mon. of November. The next semester is scheduled to begin in Feb.   Sam has really enjoyed spending this time in the Word of God teaching Bible Doctrines and  New Testament Survey.  
We have already been in contact with men that want to help again next summer in the construction of the radio station project in Thorne Bay,  Alaska.  There is still no electric to the property and a diesel powered generator will cost around $6,000. Pray that electric will become available.  It will eliminate this expense, but will also allow us to broadcast through the evening as there is presently a restriction to running generators during the evening hrs to reduce the noise created by generators.
