Dear Friends in Christ,

This month, we had to say some more “Good-byes”.  4 ladies that we have ministered to over the years are now Home with the Lord; Sally (from Black Mesa that we met years ago and has been a dear friend over the years), Thelma (from the nursing home where Janet has been visiting), Geraldine’s daughter (Geraldine is one of the Bible School students where Sam is teaching) and Rena (her husband Charlie died on New Year’s day-they were both faithful members of the church in Tuba City where we pastored a few years ago).

Yet God has balanced the “Good-byes” with several “Hellos” for this coming year as several babies are expected to make an appearance.  One of our missionary gals is expecting a baby boy in about a month.  One of Janet’s piano students is expecting early this summer and also some of our grandchildren are going to give us some more great grandchildren before the year is over.  Children are truly a gift from God and we thank Him for each new life.

 Each summer, Sam travels to Thorne Bay, Alaska to work on the radio station project. The exterior is finished but the interior is still waiting for completion.  Here are some of the things that we would like to accomplish this summer:
*wiring (already provided but needs installation)
*insulation ($3,000 needed)
*skirting to keep wild animals from making their home under the building
 (Approx. $500 needed)
*install wood stove (already provided but needs installation)
*footers for the extension that will include kitchen and bathroom
(Approx. $1500 needed)
Here are some things you can pray with us about:
*for the Alaska Power company to bring electric to the property
*finances to continue to keep this project debt-free
*volunteer work crews with the needed skills 
*reasonable air fares for self and workers

Jones February 2019

Dear Family and Friends,
Thank you so much for your prayers and financial support these last few months. Currently, Jacob is on full time deputation. It’s been an exciting and busy time for us! There is a lot going on with the Jones family.
During the month of November, Jacob flew to Texas to present at 5 churches in southern Texas. He spent 2 and a half weeks staying with his parents in Beeville, TX. There, he presented at nearby churches. Jacob got to see and catch up with his parents.

On November 11th, Roxanna and Alex made the decision to dedicate their daughter, Miracle, to the Lord at Bethel Independent Baptist Church. On November 30th, Bro. Jacob and Mrs. Veldhuis (His mother in-law) planned a teen bonfire.They had hot dogs, chips, water, and roasted marshmallows. Jacob preached on “How To Be Born Again?” The teens listened but did not make a decision about salvation. Please keep them in your prayers.
In December, Jacob presented at 3 churches. Two churches were located in California and one church was in Arizona. Jacob and Lydia got to spend more time together and help out at their church (Cocopah Bethel Independent Baptist Church) in Yuma, AZ. On December 8th, they had an all church Christmas bake day. It went well and they had a good turn out. Mrs Veldhuis told a story on Jesus’ birth.

Pastor Veldhuis, Jacob, and a few church members helped pick fruit. They put about 15 pieces of fruit in each bag with a little bit of candy and a Gospel tract. The church handed out these bags on the reservation. Churches are not allowed to door knock but they are allowed to give out free bags of fruit.

All throughout the month, Jacob and Lydia went through discipleship with a couple of teens and adults. On the 31st, the church had a New Years celebration. This celebration included preaching, fireworks, games, and food. We had a fun time!

During the month of January, Jacob traveled throughout California presenting their ministry. He was able to present at 6 churches during that month! He had a wonderful time presenting and fellowshipping with pastors and others!

For the next few months, Jacob and Lydia will be living at the Ronald McDonald Home in Phoenix so that her doctors can keep a closer watch over Lydia and little Samuel. Lydia’s lung function has remained stable, although her pulmonary pressure has a higher risk of increasing as the pregnancy progresses. Please pray for God’s protection for she and Samuel as she has been experiencing some preterm contractions. Thankfully, they were able to be stopped each time before they progressed into labor.

Deputation Goals for 2019:

On July 29th, we started full time deputation. We have traveled over 15,000 miles on the road. As of now, we are at 48% of our support goal. These past few months have not been easy. Traveling 15,000 miles, dealing with car repairs, my father in-law’s cancer, and Lydia’s pregnancy complications with baby Samuel on the way are some of the trials we have faced. Despite all of this, God has been good to us. He has helped us emotionally, physically, and financially these past few months.

We want to thank you all for prayers for my family as well as those of you who send your monthly support. Continue to pray for us as we try to wrap things up on deputation. We are trusting that God will provide enough funds for us to stop deputation July 1st of this year. Please consider helping us reach our goal financially!

Future Ministry Goals

One of our main goals is to begin a couples class at Bethel Independent Baptist Church. Another is to start the H.O.P.E. addiction ministry. In the future, we also desire to plant a church on the Quechan reservation and establish other ministries as the Lord leads us to start in order to reach Natives for Christ. Please pray that God would begin working in hearts and opening doors in order to allow us to reach these goals.

Currently ,there are over 1.6 million Native Americans in the United States and 562 distinct sovereign tribes. Many of these tribes struggle with substance abuse and poverty and have no gospel witness. Please pray with us that God will send more laborers into the Native American field located right in our backyard.

Personal Needs:
That more churches will take us on for support. As of now, we are at 48% of our needed support.
That God will provide for a ministry vehicle or the money to purchase one. We are looking into purchasing a $3,500 to $4,000 car.

Dear Family and Friends,
     Thank you so much for your prayers and financial support these last few months. Currently, Jacob is on full time deputation. It’s been an exciting and busy time for us! There is a lot going on with the Jones family.

     During the month of August, we presented at 9 churches, continued Teen discipleship off and on with the Cocopah, and had our monthly teen activity.

     For the monthly activity, if our teens attend church three times a month, they are allowed to attend the activity. This month’s activity was a trip to Pizza Hut. We had 8 kids that attended!

      We presented our burden throughout New Mexico and Arizona. It was beautiful to see the sights as we traveled! Through generous donations, we were able to get a 5 liter oxygen concentrator to allow Lydia to travel with Jacob for part of the month. God also provided funding for a wheelchair when she was less able to walk.

     Discipleship has been going well! We are going through a teen discipleship book called “Love, Dating and Marriage.” Jacob is working with two teen boys named Loren and Tyler. Lydia is working with two teen girls named Mariella and Molly. We are seeing them learn more about God’s love and how we are to keep pure for marriage.

     In the month of September, we had the opportunity to present at 6 churches throughout Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. We had a great time! We got to see family and friends as well as exploring the sights in those states.  

    On the 8th, Pastor Veldhuis took a few of our teenagers to the Arizona Regional Youth Conference in Peoria, AZ. They had a great time! We also continued discipleship with the same 4 teenagers from August as well as 1 Cocopah young adult.

   On the 28th, we had our monthly teen activity which consisted of an open house/taco night at our new apartment.

We also found out that Lydia is pregnant!

     At the end of September, she was told that she can no longer travel because of the risk to her and the baby. It was decided that she would stay in Yuma and help with the work here while Jacob continues to travel.

     During the month of October, Jacob traveled throughout New Mexico presenting our ministry He was able to present at 10 churches during that month! From the 25th- the 27th, Bethel Independent Baptist Church (The Cocopah church where we are serving) hosted a Native Revival with three Navajo guest preachers and a meal every night. We had a special program for 1st-5th graders, and childcare for infants-4 year olds.

     We had a great attendance and the preaching was well received. We had one young man accepted Christ for salvation that week!
 On the 27th, right after the Native Revival, we had our monthly teen activity where we played Capture the Flag. and Jacob was able to give a message on “Walking With God” All went well.

These last three month have been exciting and busy…

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Week-end before Christmas, Sam was privileged to preach at Inscription House at the T’saa Biiliin church and then enjoy their special Christmas dinner and program. The songs were arranged by one of their own members and they did a great job. It was a joy to be invited to join them.

Sam makes and repairs saddles and tack and has various Scripture verses on the walls of his workshop. Most of the cowboys that come in already know he is a preacher but the need for his help brings them in anyways. Sometimes doors are open and sometimes closed to tell them of the Gospel of salvation or even give them a free Bible to read. Just before Christmas, one cowboy prayed and accepted God’s gift of salvation. A good way to end the year!
( Pray for Alonzo to bring his family to church and grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. (I Pet. 3:18) So far, holiday activities, bad weather and now sickness, have kept them away.)

The first week of 2019 has been a bit more difficult. On Jan 1, a dear brother in Christ, one of the leaders of the church when we were pastoring in Tuba City, had a heart attack and left us. On Jan 3, another brother in Christ (from the church in Flagstaff where we attend when we are in town) was involved in a road accident and went Home to be with our Lord.

Then, on Jan 7, we went to the hospital to encourage a couple as the husband went into surgery. Later that day, we received a call from one of our daughters that our grandson was going into surgery. His left index finger had an encounter with a table saw and severed the bone at the joint. They were told at the hospital that the best hand-surgeon just “happened” to be in the hospital at that time! It took 4 hrs of surgery but Nate’s finger was re-attached and the joint wired . He will never bend that finger again, but should have feeling in it and is now on the road to recovery.

We can focus on the emotional and physical pain of each of these events, or we can rejoice: #1-Both Charlie and Bob had “fought the fight and finished the course and kept the faith” (II Tim. 4:7) and now enjoying the presence of God in Heaven!

#2-There were several that responded at Bob’s memorial that they wanted Christ as their Saviour! Death is always a reminder to the living that we need to be ready and use this life to praise God.
#3-We are thankful for modern technology and skilled Doctors that God uses to repair damaged bodies.

#4- Best of all-We have a God who was not surprised by these events, but had a plan for each of these men. He is fully in Control! A very good reminder as we enter a new year!

Sondergaard Update – Andrew is Home!

Dear Praying Friends and Family,

Thank you for praying for our family. We are so thankful for God’s grace for our every need. On Sunday, Andrew was discharged from the hospital. Monday morning we met with an ophthalmologist who could tell Andrew’s optic nerve and retina are normal. That was a big encouragement and answer to prayer since we wondered if he could even see. There is some delayed development which refers back to neurology.

At the hospital, the neurologists referred us to a geneticist to identify a possible genetic disorder. Also in the next two months Andrew has appointments with urologists, neurologists, a neurosurgeon, and a geneticist. Please pray for wisdom for each of the specialists he sees. Though we still have many questions, we see God’s moment by moment grace, and we are thankful for so many who pray.

Also, please pray for Ladies Bible study on Monday. Many ladies have been coming and this time in God’s Word has been such a help and encouragement.

Sondergaard’s Letter January 2019

Dear Family and Friends,
We are writing this letter from Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Andrew is now three months old and is on his third hospital stay. Thursday of this week, we had an appointment with a pediatric neurologist who had several concerns with Andrew. After an x-ray and evaluation, the doctor urged us to bring him to Phoenix Children’s. Since being admitted, Andrew has had blood tests, an MRI, a CT scan, an EEG, and a lumbar puncture (his third). The primary concern for now is his head and arching his back. At one point it was suggested he had craniosynostosis (which would mean major surgery). We are thankful that was ruled out and instead he has plagiocephaly (which can be helped with positioning). At this point, we still have many questions as we wait for the results from the many tests. A secondary concern is for his eyes (which seem to have limited vision). On Monday, he has an appointment with a pediatric ophthalmologist. We plan to give a quick update after this appointment.

While in the ER waiting for Andrew to have a lumbar puncture (which is very painful), Naomi and I were listening to a recent revival service at Ambassador Baptist College. Before the message someone sang:

I trust in God wherever I may be,
Upon the land, or on the rolling sea,
For come what may, from day to day,
May Heavenly Father watches over me.
I trust in God, I know He cares for me;
On mountain bleak or on the stormy sea,
Though billows roll, He keeps my soul;
My Heavenly Father watches over me.”

In the last several months I have often challenged the people here to trust God no matter what happens in life. Now God is giving us the opportunity to do that too.

In recent months, the children at church have been very disrespectful, making teaching difficult. Our hearts are often heavy and burdened with prayer. A couple weeks ago, one of the twins wrote on his water cup, “I hate my life.” We addressed it and he broke down crying and said, “But, It’s true.” Jimmy is only eight! We took the opportunity to show our love and remind him that God has a purpose for his life. As we show compassion may God make a difference in these lives (Jude 24).

One of the ladies who comes faithfully recently asked Naomi to counsel her granddaughter. Sicily, a teenager, was recently expelled from school for anger and disrespect. Naomi has met with her once so far and expects to begin meeting regularly as soon as possible. Sicily is not saved but is open to talking about God. Please pray that God would open her heart to receive Biblical truth.
Rachel (the one who had her leg amputated) shared her thankfulness that God didn’t heal her leg but instead God chose to heal her heart. Her face radiated joy when she told us she was reading all through the Bible for the first time in her life. What a blessing to see God’s people hungry for God’s Word!

Our church building is made of two connected buildings. The main building is where we have the auditorium, restrooms, one classroom, and the office. This building was nicely remodeled a few years ago by several of you. The other building is where we have a kitchen, a nursery, two classrooms, and a large open area which is used for a
fellowship hall and children’s ministry. This building is an older modular with a flat roof. In the last year or so the modular has been showing signs of needing some major repair or replacement. Besides structural and electrical issues, there are several major leaks in the roof. A leaking roof isn’t too much of a problem in Arizona, but two weeks ago it was raining on Sunday morning and several buckets were collecting rain water. Please pray with us as we seek the best option for this building.

The Veldhuis December 2018 Prayer Update

Dear Friends in Christ,
Each November, we try to fly back to the east coast to spend Thanksgiving with our family.  This is the only time we get to see each other for most of them and we always look forward to the visit.  This year, our family surprised us with a surprise party to celebrate our 50th anniversary.  It was actually this past August but they weren’t able to get together at that time.  We had 4 of our 6 children, their spouses, several of our grandchildren and even one great grandchild there!  Sam jr.’s family in Alaska even joined us by “face time”!  We feel so blessed with the family that God has given us.

We are now back home in AZ and back into the routine of visitation and Bible classes.    The Sunday before Christmas, we will be on the Navajo Reservation for their Sunday services as well as their Christmas dinner.  After this coming Sunday, the Bible College classes will be taking a break for the holidays and starting up again in January.  It is a joy to us to see various students using their studies to serve the Lord.  

We have been asked about that earthquake in Anchorage and how Sam’s family is doing.  They were actually in Anchorage for dental appointments that day.  Sam was even in the dentist chair and all numbed up for drilling when the quake hit.  Amber and the 3 boys were in the hotel and experienced the shaking and power outage, but no-one was hurt.  This will mean another trip for them to get their dental work done, but we are thankful for God protecting them.

We want to wish each of you a Joyous Christmas as we remember that our Creator was “pleased as man with men to dwell” because He knew our need for salvation and was willing to pay the price for us!  What love!  (We don’t send many Christmas cards outside of our family because of the cost of postage, so please accept this as our Christmas card to you.)

Baucom’s December 2018 Letter

Dear Friends Of Tommy & Elaine,                                           

From Elaine:  The past year and a half have been very trying due to Tom’s health. The doctors kept giving him medications before knowing a diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease this past April. He’s doing much better now with the right medication, but still  has not regained full strength to do all he would like to do. This is my main prayer request for he and I.  Due to his illness and fainting spell in the drug store a few weeks ago, I have needed to be by his side more then usual and do most the driving.

We are both still working at the church everyday and doing all we can to keep things moving. We are thankful that God counted us worthy putting us in the ministry here. We love it.  There are so many things that has to be looked after and kept up along with visiting hospitals not only for ourselves but to see our folks that are there. I thought I could retire from the Academy a few years ago, but that has not happened. I still have a good hand in it as well. The church has a couple of our men that can preach and help Tom out that way when needed. I have to stay on him about going so hard even with his health condition. He feels like he has to be in the pulpit preaching every service. But he pays for it thereafter. He just won’t slow down. The specialist had him on a heart monitor the past two weeks due to his Atrial fibrillation.  

Our son John is also a great part of our church and God has been using him in many ways. He desires a helpmeet so that’s another request. He was saved last year, God is so good!  I’m scheduled for surgery soon for a hip replacement. Just waiting on open date.  Please help me pray about this and also that the timing of surgery will be at a time when Tom will be well enough to help with driving and looking after things for us.

From Tom:                 The church is doing well with about 30 people on average. There are a couple of people coming that are not saved yet. I expect them to move every Sunday, but they just stand there often weeping.  The work here is slow so it can get discouraging at times, especially in the cold, cold months and not too many sun shinny days. By the way, our Church just gave John & I (same birthdays) a wonderful birthday party. They also included mine and Elaine’s 45th.year anniversary along with our 30 yrs. of being here on the Reservation. Please pray for our church. They love the Lord and desire revival. There’s always some kind of work to do here. We are raising money to re-pave our church parking lot this coming summer, Lord willing. 🙂  We will say more about this soon. We have already raised close to $9000.00, thanks to the Lords people.

We hope to be able to visit the south maybe in the coming summer. Winter time driving, don’t even go there. We’ve learned our lesson. Driving is a task. It hurts to sit in one place long. Most our churches are about 800 to a 1000 miles away. We used to drive it all in one day. Gone are those days.

Thank you all so much for being a part of our lives through your financial support and  prayers. You are such dear friends to such of the least like Elaine and I. You and the Lord Jesus makes us feel like we’re important.  Bless His Name!  And lest I forget, ………..Merry Christmas.

Dear Ones in Christ,

We do come before our great God with thankful hearts realizing how He keeps us in His loving care and has met so many needs. Gary continues doing well recovering from the bloodclots and is able to carry on his normal duties.

Paul & Naomi’s baby Andrew, now six weeks old, is gaining weight and doing much better. We are so thankful for your prayers for both Gary and Andrew.

Recent blessings were a visit from Bev’s brother, Bob, his son and wife, Max and Lea, from Indiana. We enjoyed such a sweet time of fellowship and reminiscing. Though almost 95 years old, Bob continues to serve the Lord among the folk in his assisted living facility through Bibles studies, prayer and encouragement.

Another great blessing was our annual Thanksgiving Candlelight Service. It is a time when our folk share their testimony and praise to our wonderful Heavenly Father for his abundant blessing.

Things are getting busy as we begin working on the ladies Christmas party, the children’s Christmas party and the Christmas program.

*That parents of our Jr. Ch. children would see their need to attend with their children, not just

Sondergaard November 2018

Dear Family and Friends:
“Let everything that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the Lord” Psalm 150:6. This month we have been reminded that every breath is a gift God gives that we might praise Him. A breath is such a simple gift that is easy to expect and take for granted. May the tests God has allowed our family to experience remind each of us to praise God. A breath: a simple yet wonderful gift. Don’t waste the gifts God gives you! Praise Him today!

We are thankful for many of you who expressed love and concern while Andrew was in the hospital. You gave encouragement when our faith was challenged, and God answered your prayers! Andrew is now home after spending 14 days in isolation in the Flagstaff hospital Special Care Nursery. While in the hospital, Andrew was healed from his UTI infection and has steadily regained weight. Paul’s parents graciously took our children to their house while we were at the hospital. What a relief to know our children were in good hands!
Although Andrew is out of the hospital, we still need to have some issues checked out. He struggles feeding and often arches his back and neck. He also favors turning his head only one direction. In December he will retake a hearing test since he may have partial hearing limitation.
Thankful for God’s Work
Please pray as we get back in our responsibilities both at home and church. It has almost been a whole month since Naomi has taught the church children or homeschooled our own children. Naomi and Beverly are planning a ladies Bible study this coming Monday evening and Paul is back to preparing messages. Thankfully the Lord allowed Pastor’s hospital stay to be at a time when we could fill in and then the Messicks could fill in when we were gone. Most of all we are thankful for God giving our health back. We are reminded of the need for more laborers for the ministry here.
Thankful for God’s Care
Recently we asked for prayer for Paul as he deals with being out of breath. He was finally able to get in to a pulmonologist who discovered that Paul has pectus excavatum (which is a structural condition where his ribs press against his wind pipe and heart). It appears that his breathlessness is due to his wind pipe being pressed and partially closed. We are thankful that he doesn’t have a lung disease that could only get worse but instead has a condition that can be corrected. Paul is now waiting to get in to a doctor who can advise on treatment.
Thankful for Spiritual Reminders and New Visitors
God graciously reminds us of our need to live every day for Him. On hearing of the death of Missionary Charles Wesco in Cameroon, we were reminded of the urgent need to live every day for eternity. “Only one life will soon be past, only what’s done for Christ will last!”
For the past month, a Native American lady named Denise (Denni), has been coming faithfully to church. She expressed her thankfulness for our church and the preaching of the Word of God. She often brings her son Scotty or her grandson Hayden. Please pray for their salvation and her spiritual growth.
